Days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. It's time to face the cold again.
For some of us, like me, this is our favourite time of year. There's nothing I love more than dusting off my winter boots and pulling out my knitted scarves, jumpers and gloves. And who doesn't love snuggling their man all rugged up in his favourite cable knit sweater? Yum.
But before we get so rugged up we look like the Michelin Man after a feast of doughnuts and marshmallow hot chocolates, let's talk about the right way to layer this autumn/winter season.
Start With The Basics
Always start with the basics. A great pari of jeans is a winter essential. I take my clients to G-Star Raw for jeans. One of my clients was so burdened by jeans shopping she had just given up. When we went to G-Star she took home every pair she tried on. She looked and felt amazing!
Pick up your basic winter t's and singlets from Zara. White and black are essential, but don't be afraid to add colour wherever you can. Winter is grey enough, you don't have to be too.
For casual days throw on a vest or cardigan next. In winter you can really play with colours and textures here. Faux fur is fun and so are large knits, suede is amazing and fringing is a must.
When it's getting cooler or you're after a dressier look add your winter jackets. Here's where you can be clever and choose beautifully patterned or block coloured jackets to lift your look.
Be On The Lookout for Colour
Be on the look out for dark greens, rich plums, mustards and tapestry prints. My hint when buying jackets is to watch the length and the shoulders. To avoid looking bulky choose a jacket with structure built in. It will keep your laters looking feminine and shaped.
Add your scarf now. And remember, if you take your outerwear off you can leave your scarf on for a super chic winter look. Choose a complimentary colour for your scarf. If you have a patterned jacket go with a block colour scarf and vice versa.
Wear a Winter Hat
If you're a real fashionista you will definitely be adding a winter hat. Whether it be a felt fedora or knit beanie, it will add warmth and individuality to your look.
If you're after a completely stylish vibe, I love the amazing capes we're seeing again this winter. Check out Jonté Designs for the best this season has to offer.
A trench coat and scarf are an easy and classic layering style for executive wardrobes. And opaque stockings warm up any outfit.
Your Boho Winter
A fashion favourite of mine is layering over soft silk or chiffon floral boho style dresses. For a fresh feel wear your favourite boho dress with knee high boots and knee high socks and ankle boots. Layer with your suede vest, coloured jacket and scarf. If you're feeling extra brave keep your legs nude. It's the sexy way to stay winter warm and who says skin is only for summer?
