When you walk into a room, a meeting, a presentation or a networking event you immediately begin to survey the attendees. You're looking for the person in charge, the people who are the influencers, you're looking for the leaders. You identify them on site, and whether you're doing it consciously or subconsciously, you're using the same criteria. Who is the one that 'looks' like the leader of this group, table, room, meeting? We all expect people of power, success and influence to 'look' a certain way.
So why is it that you can always tell who the boss is without being told?
It's an air that they have. The way they carry themselves. They always look like they're going somewhere, and they're always dressed better than you are.
Somewhere along the line, leaders learnt that their visual image counts. They learnt that to hold a certain position within a company meant looking a certain way. They understood that there was a distinct disconnect when you don't look the part.
And whilst the boss can certainly afford more expensive outfits than you can, money isn't the only key to dressing with style and professionalism. You don't need to break the bank to look smart. Good quality corporate wear doesn't follow massive style trends. A classic, well fitted outfit will stand the test of time.
To look the part on a budget, shop the sales and discount outlets. The perfect fit will make an outfit look even more expensive than it is, and an expensive suit that doesn't fit right will look cheap no matter how much you paid for it.
Take some time, and get some expert help to find the right styles and colours for you. Be purposeful in your appearance and others will see you as the one to watch in the future. Dress down and that's where your career will go.
I can hear from the back stalls someone saying 'but my actions should speak louder than my clothes!'. And maybe that's true. But we've all seen it plenty of times. The guy who is clever but disheveled who becomes the leaders side kick. He's useful, but never elevated. It all comes down to who you want to be. Will you lead, or will you follow?
In my business I work with business leaders from small to large entities. And I like working with them because they understand and value what I do for them. One of my favourite business clients is a Perth business leadership coach who, since utilising my services has shifted her business from one-on-one small business coaching to corporate coaching. A goal most leadership coaches aim for. She has said to me that she would never have made it through the corporate front doors without my expert styling. And it's true. With a ten year background in Operational and Strategic Corporate Management, I know this client didn't dress well enough to get a seat at the table. When I dialed up the appearance, it dialed up the career. That's just how it works.
My clients are movers and shakers. They may be starting small, but they're never thinking small. If your business goals are to swim with the big fishes, then you better start to look like one.
